History
Te Mania Angus Stud was founded in Southland in 1928 by Edwin Wilding. In 1934 it was moved to its present location 160kms north of Christchurch at Conway Flat beside the Conway River.
Since its inception, Te Mania has built a reputation as one of New Zealand's leading Angus studs consistently producing top breeding stock benefiting herds in New Zealand and internationally.
Te Mania Voyager was the first New Zealand Angus Bull to be exported to Scotland. From 1943 through until the late 1960s bulls were sold in Christchurch in conjunction with the New Zealand Angus Association.
In 1952 the management of the Te Mania herd was transferred over to Frank and Jo Wilding While working in the stud cattle industry overseas, Frank, had seen the value of performance recording and in 1962 purchased scales and began performance recording the herd. The data was evaluated by Lincoln University, New Zealand’s leading agricultural institution. That same year Frank began calving heifers at two years of age and the stud has continued this mating practice successfully up to the present time.
In the late 1960s Te Mania held its first 'on farm' sale where 35 bulls were sold. The number of bulls sold annually has increased to over 100. This being one of the largest on -farm bull sales in New Zealand.
In 1971 the Te Mania stud was further extended by the transfer of 48 females and two bulls to Mary and Andrew Gubins of Colac, Victoria, Australia. Mary being the sister of Frank Wilding. Te Mania Australia has now grown to be one of Australia’s largest Angus seed stock producers. The two Te Mania herds together produce one of the largest Angus genetic bases in Australasia.
In 1982 Tim and Katie Wilding took over the Te Mania herd. Tim had the same desire to continue with a performance driven cattle breeding program. This resulted in Te Mania being the first New Zealand herd to use Australasia Group Breedplan. With the use of EBV’s Te Mania has made huge genetic gains and the introduction of objective measuring of carcass traits through ultrasound scanning has developed Te Mania Angus into the leading carcass stud in New Zealand.
2004 saw the restructuring of the Te Mania management team to ensure Te Mania Angus stays at the leading edge of performance driven Angus genetics.
